THE Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) is giving relief to all customers of Manila Water Co. Inc. following a water shortage that hit about 1.2 million households in Metro Manila and Rizal province earlier this year.

In a press briefing on Tuesday, MWSS chief regulator Patrick Lester Ty announced that the government-run agency would be implementing rebates for Manila Water customers starting in June, to be applied in two ways.

For all 6.8 million customers across the East Zone, the MWSS will waive the basic charge, which represents the first 10 cubic meters consumed in a month, which is equivalent to P153.93.

Severely affected customers will receive an additional rebate amounting to P2,197.94 each.

Ty said these were customers who experienced either continuous or intermittent water interruption for seven days from March 6 to 31.

Sample computations of these rebates will be available on the MWSS-Regulatory Office’s (MWSS-RO) website.

Ty told reporters there were more than 140,000 customers who were mostly affected by the shortage in March based on the list of 45 villages (barangay) provided by the Ayala-led utility firm when it offered a one-time bill relief in April.

He said this was a result of the P1.13-billion penalty imposed by the MWSS Board of Trustees on Manila Water for its failure to meet its service obligation of round-the-clock supply to all its customers.
