The country’s production of chicken and chicken eggs went up in the first three months of the year as growth was noted in almost all regions, the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) said.

In its Chicken Situation Report, PSA said total chicken output in the January-March period grew by 4.3 percent to 459,060 metric tons (MT) from last year’s 439,960 MT.

Central Luzon produced the most at 166,540 MT, contributing 36.3 percent to total production. This was followed by Calabarzon, 16.8 percent and Northern Mindanao, 9.1 percent. The three regions accounted for more than half or 62.2 percent of the total output.

Total inventory of chicken was estimated at 184,880 million birds as of April 1.

“The inventory of layer chicken was recorded at 9.74 million birds or 7.3 percent higher than the previous year’s record of 37.05 million birds. Native/improved chicken inventory at 82.84 million birds declined by 1.0 percent from its previous year’s level of 83.66 million birds. Broiler chicken inventory dropped by 2.1 percent, from 63.63 million birds in 2018 to 62.29 million birds in 2019,” PSA said.

During the three-month period, the average farmgate price of broiler chicken in commercial farms was P72.86 per kilo, down 16.8 percent from P87.54 per kilo a year earlier.

Meanwhile, local chicken egg production reached 142,010 MT, up 8.8 percent from last year’s 130,550 MT, PSA said. Increases in chicken egg production were registered in all regions, except for Cordillera Administrative Region and Bicol Region. The three highest chicken egg-producing regions are Calabarzon, Central Luzon and Central Visayas, it added.

As of April 1, adult female inventory of native/improved chicken was up to 22.64 million birds. Similarly, laying flock inventory of foreign strain layers was 32.78 million birds, up 8.4 percent from last year’s 30.25 million birds.

The average farmgate price of chicken egg in commercial farms was P4.68 per piece, up 2.1 percent from year-ago’s P4.59, PSA said.
