Sale of Marcos jewelry awaiting Duterte’s formal order to PCGG

MANILA, Philippines — The Presidential Commission on Good Government (PCGG) is still waiting for President Rodrigo Duterte’s formal order allowing the auction of former First Lady Imelda Marcos’ jewelry collection worth over P700-million.
“Wala pang formal action si PRRD,” Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra said Monday.
“We’ll wait for PRRD’s action on the memo submitted to his office last Thursday. He may have some specific instructions,” he added.
PCGG is an attached agency of the Department of Justice (DOJ). It recently sought the President’s approval for the public auction of Marcos’ Hawaii jewelry collection, which is currently being kept at the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP).
It is reported to be one of the more valuable collections of Mrs. Marcos along with her Roumeliotes Collection.
The Hawaii Collection is said include about 300 pieces of jewelry that were seized by the US Bureau of Customs upon the Marcoses’ arrival in Hawaii, where they fled at the height of the Edsa People Power Revolution in February 1986.
Without the written order from Duterte, PCGG could not start with the auction, according to Guevarra. (Editor: Katherine G. Adraneda)
