Nowadays, smartphones are as necessary as the air you breathe. Gone are the days when owning one is a luxury. You do almost everything on your gadgets that they have become an extension of your own being. Even your choice of smartphone already says a lot about you as a person, including your personal traits and even your spending habits.

And that’s what we’re going to explore in this column. Let’s narrow it down to two brands of smartphones: iPhone and Android. While there are more smartphone makers not named Apple, they are all powered by the same Android system. So if you think about it, it’s either you own an iPhone or you own an Android phone.

iPhone users: The lavish ones

Have you ever heard of the stereotype that iPhones are for the elite? Judging by their current market share in the Philippines at 19.39 percent, the stereotype will remain relevant. It also coincides with a recent study from shopping site Slickdeals that compared the behavior of iPhone users and Android users.

They found that iPhone users earn an average annual salary of $53,251.00 (roughly P2.2 million). This gives them the power to spend an average of $100.88 (roughly P5,000.00) a month on tech, $117.13 (roughly P6,000.00) on clothing, and $82.71 (roughly P4,000.00) on beauty products.

iPhone users are all about living the best possible life. They are not afraid to spend on things they want and they are always ready to adopt the newest trend. They are ready to spend a fortune on five star hotels just to get the best accommodation during their travels. They are more extroverted, often attending the trendiest festivals and concerts.

Also, iPhone users enjoy their phones so much, judging by their average usage of 4 hours and 54 minutes. They are more likely to spend money on app purchases just to improve their overall smartphone experience. Basically, they are financial risk takers not worried about enjoying themselves too much.

Android users: The frugal ones

The plucky Android continue to be the ultimate smartphone choice for the common Filipino, with 80.07 percent of the market share. According to the same Slickdeals study, Android users tend to be more frugal and wise when it comes to their spending.

They earn an average annual salary of $37,040.00 (roughly P1.9 million) and they spend way less compared to iPhone users. They only spend $50.33 (roughly P2,600.00) a month on tech, $62.36 (roughly P3,200.00) on clothing, and $40.40 (roughly PHP 2,000.00) on beauty products.

Android users are realistic with their expenses. They are the ones actively searching for promos and discounts whenever they shop. They are more hesitant to spend money unless they really have to. They tend to recognize that there are more important things to spend money on than their smartphones. Basically, Android users are the more grounded ones.

They are also more introverted so they are less likely to spend money on trips and outdoor events. More often than not, they are the ones who will choose the cheaper hotels every time they travel. They will forgo special amenities like spas and swimming pools even if it means saving a few bucks.

Android users also spend less time on their phones, only averaging for 3 hours and 42 minutes a day. They also spend less money on app purchases since majority of apps on Google Play are free. That’s probably why they chose an Android phone in the first place—because they just need a phone that does the essentials.

There you have it. Bet you didn’t know your smartphone choice revealed a lot about how you handle your finances. But remember that these are just mere generalizations that hopefully made you reflect on your spending habits. You’re free to choose any smartphone you want, as long as you don’t break the bank buying it.
