Mayor Sotto suspends odd-even traffic scheme

Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto fulfilled his promise to suspend the “disjointed and unjust” odd-even traffic scheme implemented in selected roads in the city since 2016.
In a memorandum circular, Sotto has directed key government offices and its personnel to suspend its apprehension of violators of the three-year-old traffic scheme
The scheme, considered by many as ineffective, was enforced along Elisco Road, R. Jabson Street, San Guillermo Street, Sandoval Avenue, and F. Legaspi Road.
It prohibited four-wheeled vehicles with license plates ending with even numbers to pass the selected roads every Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
While on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, vehicles with license plates ending with odd numbers were not allowed to pass the thoroughfare.
The 30-year-old Sotto explained that the ordinance, which laid out the provisions of the scheme, “was not implemented validly [for] some streets did not even go through City Council approval.”
The scheme, Sotto furthered, was “unfair and poorly coordinated” with other local government units. “It may ease traffic in those roads but we need to look at the bigger picture.”
Sotto has also signed his first executive order that mandates the creation of a traffic management task force. It will review and propose new solutions to the city’s traffic woes. (Jhon Casinas)
