MANILA, Philippines — President Rodrigo Duterte’s personal record-high satisfaction rating proved that democracy in the Philippines is “working,” a political analyst asserted on Tuesday.

“When it is perceived as popular in the rating, that only shows that our democracy is working [and] that people appreciates what happened in the past three years. This is why the President still had a high rating,” Ramon Casiple, executive director of the Institute For Political and Electoral Reform, said in a press briefing when asked why Duterte has a higher satisfaction rating.

In a recent Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey, Duterte’s satisfaction rating exceeded his previous record from +66 in March 2019 to +68 in June 2019.

SWS said some 80 percent were satisfied with Duterte’s performance while 12 percent said they were not satisfied.

Casiple further explained that democracy is alive as some opposition groups had the freedom to conduct rallies against Duterte.

“I would say democracy in the Philippines is alive and kicking in fact merong mga opposition… nagrarally diyan in all these issues that is also a manifestation that we have democracy,” he said. (Editor: Julie Espinosa)
