MANILA, Philippines — Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Oscar Albayalde said they will not tolerate its policemen who fail to support their respective families.

“Unang una hindi natin tinotolerate ‘yan ‘pag merong complaint [na] ‘yung mga pulis natin [on] abandoning of family [or] abandonment of family kung merong reklamo,” Albayalde told reporters in Camp Alagar, Cagayan de Oro on Wednesday.

Albayalde was reacting to reports that there about 100 complaints from wives who are not getting financial support from their husbands.

Albayalde, however, said some families hesitate to file complaints thinking it could affect the jobs of policemen, who are breadwinners of the family.

“‘Yung mga pamilya ayaw mag-complain [na] mawawalan ng suporta ‘yung PNP at pulis at mawawalan ng trabaho at kawawa ang magiging anak nila,” Albayalde said.

Just after the implementation of salary hike for lawmen this year, the PNP Internal Affairs Service (PNP-IAS) observed an increase in complaints of non-support from wives.

The monthly salary that a Police Private or Police Officer 1 increased from P14,834 to P29,668. A Police Chief Master Sergeant, meanwhile, currently receives P34,761 a month.

Other police ranks also received an average increase of 58.70 percent in their monthly salary. /kga
