Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra has created a special investigating team (SIT) to solve the recent killing of radio broadcaster Eduardo Dizon.

Guevarra said the SIT assigned to the case will be comprised of prosecutors from the Department of Justice (DoJ) and agents of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI).

“As chair of the Presidential Task Force on Media Violence, I have given instructions for the creation of a special investigating team (or SIT, which will surely include the NBI) to conduct an inquiry into the killing of Eduardo Dizon and to file appropriate charges against the perpetrators thereof,” he told reporters.

Dizon, a commentator of Brigada-FM, was gunned down last Tuesday morning by unidentified gunmen along Quezon Boulevard in Kidapawan City.

At that time, Dizon was driving his white Mirage on his way home when one of two pistol-wielding men onboard a motorcycle pumped bullets into his head and chest.

Prior to the shooting, Dizon had reported to police that he had been receiving death threats.

The secretary noted that this is not the first time a SIT was created to conduct investigations on killings.

“We have formed similar SITs in EJK (extra-judicial killing) cases against human rights advocates, labor leaders, etc. and these investigations are rolling,” he said.

Guevarra explained SITs are headed by DoJ prosecutors “who assist in case build-up, and they coordinate actively with local law enforcement agents including the NBI.”

“For media killings, the Presidential Task Force has an executive director, Joel Egco, who supervises all investigations directly,” he said. (Jeffrey Damicog)
