A 23-year-old man is in custody following a hit-and-run accident that put another man in hospital on Sunday in Kelowna.

Kelowna RCMP say the accident happened around 6:45 p.m. near the intersection of Bernard Avenue and Lakeview Street. A Ford sedan struck a pedestrian and then fled the scene.

The suspect vehicle was later located by police and a 23-year-old Kelowna man was arrested.

“Investigators conducted an impaired driving investigation,” Kelowna RCMP Cpl. Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey said in a release. “He faces potential charges and is expected to appear in court at a later date.”

The pedestrian, a 20-year-old Kelowna, is listed in stable condition in hospital.

“It was heartening to see countless bystanders stop to provide assistance and comfort to the pedestrian who lay injured in the roadway,” said O’Donaghey, spokesman for the Kelowna RCMP.
