The friend of a man stabbed to death in 2017 made a public appeal this week, seeking information that could help police close the case.

Walter Rogers, known as Wally to those close to him, came to his wife’s aid around 2 a.m. on July 8, 2017, when a confrontation with an unknown person took place outside their home.

Rogers was stabbed and taken to hospital but didn’t survive his injuries. Police later identified Rogers as having been involved with the drug trade.

Investigators later determined the attackers left the scene driving Rogers’ green Dodge Caravan and a silver sedan, before later abandoning the van. Police have also identified two people of interest who may have information about the attackers and hope those two individuals will come forward to speak with police.

One is a white man with a slim build wearing a dark ball cap with a white logo and a black shirt with white graphics with a left-arm sling. The second is also a white man but with a medium build, who is bald and was wearing a striped collared T-shirt, black shorts and dark sandals at the time.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team is seeking these two persons of interest, as they may have information about the suspects int the July 8, 2017 stabbing death of Walter (Wally) Rogers. IHIT / HANDOUT / PNG

Colin McDougall is a friend of Rogers and spoke at a news conference Thursday to seek the public’s help.

“I’m not going to stand up here and tell you that Wally was an angel,” said McDougall during the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team news conference. “The police were aware of him and those of us in the local community know that he made mistakes.

“But those of us who knew Wally the best, he was a really good friend and the type that would give you the shirt off his back.”

McDougall said Rogers was over age 60 and was in no way threatening when he was stabbed to death. Rogers was in a condition such that he “could barely walk,” his friend said.

“It pains me whenever I think of how Wally’s life ended. Regardless of the wrongs we commit in life, no one deserves that. No one deserves to be killed in cold blood.”

McDougall pleaded for anyone with information about the suspects or the homicide to contact investigators.

“Wally deserves justice and if you know something that can help, do the right thing and talk to these guys at IHIT. I wish I had the information but I don’t. But someone out there does. Please do the right thing.”
