Start as you mean to go on, they say — particularly apropos if September is the other January. And if there were ever an item of clothing that epitomizes whip-smart and sharp, the blazer would be it.

Every wardrobe needs one or two that you can throw on for major presentations, big interviews and the like — basically anything that requires an air of professionalism and gives you an extra dose of confidence. From the basic to the fashion-forward, Rebecca Tay showcases five blazers that will have you standing taller this September.

If you already have a navy, grey, and a black blazer — or if you’re simply averse to anything basic and (some might say) boring, consider this ‘Mayfair’ blazer, the latest addition to J.Crew’s workwear lineup. A slight stretch keeps it comfortable, while the back pleated detail is feminine without feeling too junior.

Whether you go with a Glen plaid, classic houndstooth, or a solid hue (and yes, it’s available in all of the above), this double-breasted ‘Samuel’ blazer by Babaton is a wardrobe essential. Its slightly boxy fit and wide, peaked lapels bring a fashion-forward edge; push things even further by doing up all the buttons and going bare underneath — just don’t shy away from a bit of double-sided tape.

Yves Saint Laurent created the ‘Le Smoking’ tuxedo over 50 years ago, and to this day, it’s a powerful look. This wool version features satin lapels for a bit of class: team it with slouchy black trousers and a crisp white button-down for work, and a silk camisole and a matte red lip for evening.

When does a blazer stop being a blazer? When it no longer has buttons or lapels? If so, this cream jacket, available exclusively online, might not fit the strict definition of a blazer, per se, but it’s definitely a smart option for work — albeit one that’s slightly softer. Team with black cigarette pants for a chic Monday-to-Friday look, then swap in jeans on the weekend.

Want to make a real statement? Look no further than this bright blue plaid blazer by Italian designer brand Barena Venezia. With outside pockets and a standout hue, it’s a great piece when you want to guarantee you’ve left a lasting impression.
