The Vancouver Public Library is renaming the outdoor plaza at its central branch on Georgia Street in honour of the Dilawri Foundation.

Dilawri Square encompasses VPL’s former North and South Plazas. The site will continue to be used for various non-profit promotions, filming, performances, art installations, public rallies and other community events.

Last October, the foundation donated $5 million to expand the children’s library. The donation was the largest private donation ever to a public library in Canada.

The Dilawri Foundation is the philanthropic arm of Dilawri Group of Companies, Canada’s largest automotive group with 68 dealerships.

“We are so happy for this opportunity to touch the lives of thousands of families in our community,” Ajay Dilawri, one of the three founders of The Dilawri Foundation along with his brothers Kap and Tony, said in a statement. “Libraries and accessible public spaces such as Dilawri Square create meaningful connections between people, their families and their communities.”
