Stan Douglas is the recipient of the 2019 Audain Prize for Visual Art.

He is the first artist to receive the prize since it was increased to $100,000 from $30,000 in previous years.

“It is a great honour to be included with this group of other B.C. artists, like Rodney Graham and the late Fred Herzog, who have won the Audain Prize,” Douglas said in a news release.

Douglas is known around the world for photography and video installations that explore the complexities of history and narrative.

His public art work Abbott & Cordova, 7 August 1971, a photographic reenactment of the Gastown Riot, is in the Woodward’s Atrium at 111 West Hastings.

The 16th Audain Prize was presented Monday evening at a ceremony and dinner at The Vancouver Club.
