Police are reminding drivers and pedestrians to be careful, now that daylight is fading faster, after two pedestrians were struck within a 24 hour period.

On Sunday, a pedestrian was struck while in the crosswalk at 116th Street and 80th Avenue around 8:30 p.m. Police said the driver was moving slowly while turning the corner and that the pedestrian was apparently wearing dark-coloured clothing.

The pedestrian received only minor injuries.

The following morning, police were called to 116th Street and 94th Avenue after a pedestrian was struck. While there is a pedestrian crossing at this intersection, witnesses told police the crossing light was not activated.

“Unfortunately the pedestrian in this collision suffered more serious injuries, and was taken to hospital,” said Cris Leykauf with the Delta Police.

“It’s troubling to have two pedestrian collisions within so short a time period. We hope this will serve as a reminder for both drivers and pedestrians to take precautions. The change in weather from just a few short weeks ago definitely seems to be influencing what officers are seeing on the roads.”

• Focus on the road and be ready to yield to pedestrians, particularly in intersections.

• Be aware of other drivers. If a vehicle is stopped in front of or beside you, they may be yielding for pedestrians.

• If it’s raining and you’re turning through a crosswalk, roll down your windows for better vision of pedestrians.

• Be cautious around intersections and watch for drivers who may not have seen you.

• Don’t jaywalk, remove your headphones and don’t look at your phone while crossing the road.

• Make eye contact with drivers to ensure they have seen you.

• Use safety reflectors when walking in the dark. Community police offices in Delta distribute free reflective zipper attachments.
