POWER magazine’s second Distributed Energy Conference will build upon the success of the inaugural event, a sold-out program that brought together utilities, energy industry executives, and companies from across the spectrum of distributed power generation. Insiders from the wind and solar sectors, along with operators of backup and emergency power systems, combined heat and power, and commercial and industrial installations are lined up for the 2019 event, which will be held Oct. 30–Nov. 1 at the new Gaylord Rockies Resort near Denver International Airport in Denver, Colorado. The program will include discussions of familiar topics such as microgrids and distributed generation technologies, along with new sessions on blockchain for energy, e-mobility, economics including rate design, and corporate sustainability efforts that include renewable power generation. A sampling of the conference sponsors and their products and services are highlighted in this section.

Siemens Supports New Distributed Generation Opportunities

Siemens has a focus on distributed power generation. The company is one of the world’s largest producers of energy-efficient, resource-saving technologies for power generation and electricity transmission. Siemens recognizes that energy is among the biggest cost drivers for industrial plants as well as for office buildings, community facilities, campuses, and other similar entities. The company teamed with LO3 Energy in Brooklyn, New York, to create a pilot microgrid with blockchain technology (Figure 1), a project the companies will discuss at the Distributed Energy Conference. As energy costs and environmental considerations rise, the challenge of keeping costs in check, while ensuring a reliable and resilient supply of power—and taking steps toward sustainability—has become a focus for many businesses. Siemens works with companies to help them secure an available and reliable power supply. Siemens also is working with businesses that want to develop a “green” footprint using renewable, carbon-free power. Siemens, Munich, Germany

NRG Demonstrates Potential of DERMS

NRG Energy is a leader in innovation for distributed generation. NRG and Cummins, which designs, manufactures, distributes, and services diesel and natural gas engines, have launched a partnership that demonstrates the potential of distributed energy resource management systems (DERMS). Their new offering combines behind-the-meter natural gas generation with energy supply optimization, in many cases guaranteeing customers reliable power along with energy savings. Small-scale, on-site power solutions lower emissions and boost business efficiency, grid resiliency, and security, by reducing dependence on the grid. They can even generate revenue for your business when they’re paired with demand response programs. On-site and off-grid systems often use clean energy sources such as solar and wind power, and others use natural gas or diesel generators, sometimes in combination with efficient cogeneration units that convert waste heat into useful energy. NRG also knows that a key consideration for distributed generation is producing power near where it’s used, so that less energy is lost during transmission and distribution, making distributed energy more efficient. For companies such as hospitals and manufacturing plants that require round-the-clock power, distributed energy facilities are a must-have. Solutions are designed to match specific needs, ensuring constant electricity reliability and potentially generating revenue. NRG Energy, Houston, Texas

Solar Turbines Develops Modular Generator Sets

Solar Turbines, a Caterpillar company, has developed a modular concept for gas turbine generator sets. The system has been optimized for transportation and the scope has been minimized for civil works with the company’s Power Generation Module (PGM). This PGM solution, developed for non-hazardous applications, results in shorter installation and commissioning times, and reduces overall costs for customers. It’s part of the company’s line of complete solutions for a customer’s power needs, as Solar Turbines can help with cogeneration, dispersed power, district heating/cooling, mobile, modular, energy storage, and standby power needs for a wide variety of facilities, including colleges and universities, hospitals, industrial/processing facilities, and distributed power plants. The company’s PGM system has a simplified design to minimize maintenance and maximize productivity. It’s compact and lightweight for easy transportation, and offers standard interfaces with integrated controls and a motor control center. Solar Turbines, San Diego, California
