A new poll suggests that nearly half of British Columbians want the federal government to take more action on environmental issues.

The Research Co. poll found 45 per cent of respondents believe that the federal government has not paid enough attention to issues such as the climate crisis.

According to the survey, 29 per cent of B.C. residents think Ottawa has paid the right amount of attention to the environment, while 17 per cent believe it has focused too much on this issue.

Those who think more needs to be done were more likely to be over 55 and women, the poll found.

When it comes to the provincial and municipal governments, 43 per cent say they are not doing enough to protect the environment.

The top concerns were air pollution, followed by the pollution of lakes and rivers, climate change, and the pollution of drinking water.

Other issues were contamination of soil and water by toxic waste, deforestation, the extinction of plant and animal species, the depletion of fish stocks through overfishing, the loss of tropical rain forests, and the maintenance of the supply of fresh water for household needs.

The poll of 800 B.C. adults was conducted from Sept. 26 to Sept. 29. The margin of error is plus or minus 3.5 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.
