Members of an RCMP emergency response team have surrounded a remote cabin near the tiny Kootenay village of Argenta as police negotiate with a wanted man inside.

The standoff began around 7 p.m. on Thursday when Kaslo RCMP officers went to a rural property in the Argenta area in order to serve arrest warrants on an individual known to police.

Police say the man fled and retreated inside a nearby cabin.

“The RCMP southeast district emergency response team, along with crisis negotiators have been deployed to the area and remain at the scene,” RCMP spokesman Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey said in a news release. “Our efforts to negotiate a peaceful end and resolution continue at this time.”

The RCMP is asking the public to avoid the area for safety reasons.

Argenta is on the northern tip of Kootenay Lake, about 110 kilometres north of Nelson.

Given the remote location, police say no other properties nor any members of the public were evacuated.
