Gen. Oscar Albayalde has relinquished his post as head of the Philippine National Police, PNP spokesman Brig. Gen. Bernard Banac confirmed on Monday.

Banac said Albayalde decided to step down because of the drug recycling controversy involving some police officers that is being investigated by the Department of the Interior and Local Government and Congress.

Gen. Archie Gamboa was named acting PNP chief.

Albayalde consulted DILG Secretary Eduardo Año about his intent to step down and the latter accepted his decision, Banac said.

Albayalde is on non-duty status until he retires on November 8.

Former Criminal Investigation and Detection Group chief Benjamin Magalong earlier linked Albayalde to the alleged drug recycling in Pampanga that happened when the latter was the province’s police chief.

Albayalde denied any involvement in the illegal activity and threatened to sue his accusers. DARWIN PESCO
