Participants of the acoustic seminar

Hertz, decibels, pascal – these were the terms tossed around during the acoustic seminar held on October 2, at EDSA Shangri-La Hotel for the country’s illustrious architecture and design community. Interestingly enough, pascal which is a unit for sound pressure is also the name of the speaker that evening. Hailing from the Netherlands, Pascal van Dort is the global acoustics ambassador of Rockfon, the world’s largest manufacturer of stone wool acoustic ceilings and wall panels. The seminar brought the audience through a journey that began with unlocking the basic concepts of sound, to a discussion on the definition of acoustics or how sound behaves within built spaces and lastly to how sound impacts life.

Paraphrasing what Nobel prize-winning bacteriologist Robert Koch declared back in the 19th century, “Cholera and the Plague, forget about it, in the future, noise will be plague number one” Pascal said. True enough, the lecture showed how noise at certain levels and durations causes hearing damage.

In a room filled with design professionals, it was appropriate that Pascal left the audience with a simple formula for calculating reverberation time. This is the key metric for determining if the room’s acoustic design is appropriate for its purpose.

Rockfon, together with their Philippine distributor Skycon, takes these challenges head on with a wide range of acoustic solutions for all types of spaces that do not compromise on design for it is not only important to design for what the eyes can see but also what the ears can hear. Skycon is available for consultation and inquiries through their website www.skyconproducts.com.
