Don Cherry, the bombastic ex-hockey coach with a penchant for flamboyant suits and controversial opinions, is facing a backlash for comments made Saturday on Hockey Night in Canada regarding new immigrants wearing poppies ahead of Remembrance Day.

The 85-year-old commentator complained he wasn’t seeing as many people wearing poppies in Toronto and his hometown of Mississauga.

“You people love, that come here … you love our way of life. You love our milk and honey. At least you can pay a couple of bucks for a poppy or something like that. These guys paid for your way of life that you enjoy in Canada, these guys paid the biggest price,” Cherry said.

Ron MacLean, Cherry’s longtime Coach’s Corner co-host, apologized for Cherry’s comments during Sunday’s Hometown Hockey broadcast and on Twitter.

“I want to sincerely apologize to our viewers and Canadians. During last night’s broadcast, Don made comments that were hurtful and prejudiced and I wish I had handled myself differently. It was a divisive moment and I am truly upset with myself for allowing it,” wrote MacLean.

Cherry’s comments received criticism from Sportsnet, the National Hockey League and several prominent Canadian politicians, including Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan and NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh.

Cherry, however, offered no apology when contacted by the Toronto Sun on Sunday.

“I have had my say,” he said.

What do you think?
