Lane closures scheduled to snarl traffic on the Lions Gate Bridge over the weekend have been postponed, The B.C. Ministry of Transportation announced Friday.

Commuters were told earlier in the week to expect delays on the bridge, and maybe consider an alternate route, due to single-lane alternating traffic from 8 p.m. on Saturday to 8 a.m. on Sunday for joint and bearing repairs.

But the ministry has reversed course, cancelling the lane closures “due to the forecast extreme weather event.”

Environment Canada is calling for heavy rain and wind over the weekend, which will already be enough of a disruption to drivers in itself. Slick roads and low visibility in the evening could make for a precarious commute, and lane closures would likely just exacerbate the issue.

Another weekend detour set for 104 Avenue east of the Golden Ears Connector in Surrey will go on as planned.

The detour will be in effect for motorists destined for Barnston Island and Surrey Bend Park from 7 a.m. on Saturday until 3 p.m. on Sunday.

This detour will allow construction work to be completed at the Golden Ears connector/104 Avenue rail crossing.

Drivers will detour via 179th Street and Trigg Road and are advised to plan for extra time. Access will be maintained for cyclists and pedestrians.
