MOTORISTS using the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX) during this year’s Southeast Asian Games should expect traffic there to flow smoothly, according to their operator.

In a statement, Pangilinan-led NLEX Corp. said it was ready for the expected uptick of traffic, particularly on November 30, the start of the regional sports event.

“We assure all athletes, officials and spectators from abroad, as well as our fellow Filipinos, that they will enjoy smooth traffic flow and security at the NLEX and SCTEX for the duration of the Games,” NLEX President J. Luigi Bautista was quoted as saying in the statement.

The company has been gearing up its traffic management, coupled with some preparations conducted by the Philippine National Police and the Philippine Southeast Asian Games Organizing Committee, to assure that the expressways would not have any traffic gridlock.

Its traffic management team would also be strengthened with 100 additional field supervisors, patrol crews, traffic marshals, and security officers to assist in key NLEX-SCTEX areas.

For the date of the opening ceremony, NLEX Corp. said it would be implementing a stop-and-go scheme at Edsa Balintawak Cloverleaf and the NLEX Balintawak Toll Plaza to prioritize official SEA Games vehicle convoys.

The truck ban on the NLEX, as well as construction works along the main line of the expressways, will also be suspended during the opening ceremonies.

“For the duration of the SEA Games from December 1 to 11, patrol crews and emergency incident response teams will remain on heightened alert for all the 30 sporting events that will be held in Clark, Tarlac and Subic,” the firm said.

On a regular day, NLEX accommodates 260,000 vehicles; SCTEX, 60,000.
