BEST-Philippines snares 31 medals in Bangkok

Behrouz Elite Swimming Team-Philippines (BEST-Philippines) bagged a total of 31 medals including six golds in the 2019 HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn’s Cup-21st Royal Bangkok Invitational Swim Meet held at the Royal Bangkok Sports Club in Bangkok, Thailand.

Quezon Killerwhales standout Peter Cyrus Dean was the most decorated swimmer after claiming one gold, five silver and one bronze in the boys’ 11-12 category.

He ruled the 100m freestyle then copped silver medals in the 200m Individual Medley, 50m butterfly, 100m backstroke, 100m butterfly and 50m backstroke.

Dean also secured a bronze in 50m freestyle.

Christ Jade Andal also made some noise with one gold and a couple of silver medals in the boys’ 15-over as well as Ashby Jayce Canlas who earned one gold and one bronze in the boys’ 11-12 class.

Swimming Pinas tanker Lance Arcel Lotino chipped in two silver medals (100m butterfly and 100m breaststroke), and one bronze (100m backstroke) in the boys’ 15-over division while Ivan Nicholas Radovan had one silver and one bronze in boys’ 13-14; Shaina Andal delivered one silver and one bronze in girls’ 13-14; Amina Mondonedo got one silver in girls’ 11-12; and Zajeed Sarmiento pocketed one bronze in boys’ 11-12.

Mohammad Behrouz Mojdeh — younger brother of Philippine national junior record holder Micaela Jasmine — is making a name of his own after claiming two bronze medals in the boys’ 7-8 50m butterfly and 100m butterfly events. He also helped the boys’ 9-10 team in winning a bronze in relay event.

Ironically, butterfly event is the same forte of his sister Micaela Jasmine.

Besides individual events, the BEST-Philippines also clinched gold medals in the boys’ 11-12 200m freestyle relay, boys’ 11-12 200m medley relay and boys’ 15-over 200m medley relay; silver in boys’ 15-over 200m freestyle relay and boys’ 13-14 200m medley relay; and bronze in girls’ 13-14 200m freestyle relay, boys’ 13-14 200m freestyle relay, boys’ 9-10 200m medley relay and girls’ 13-14 200m medley relay.

“We are proud of these young swimmers. We are happy with the outcome. A lot of them are first-timers in Bangkok and we are so elated that they performed well against strong teams from China, Singapore, Thailand and Hong Kong,” said Swimming Pinas team manager Joan Mojdeh.
