Davao City mayor “Inday” Sara Duterte on Sunday questioned the song choice used when the Philippine delegation paraded during the opening ceremony of the Southeast Asian Games on Saturday.

In a post on Instagram, she asked why “Manila,” the song of iconic band Hotdog, was played.

“Di po ba Philippine flag ang dala? (Were they not carrying the Philippine flag?) she asked. “Why would you play the song Manila? Did Lapu-Lapu die for Manila? Wag po natin gawing excuse ang upbeat danceable song. Kami nagimbento ng budots. Kaloko man, oy.” (That it is an upbeat, danceable song should not be an excuse. We invented the dance “budots.” This is crazy),” she added.

“We should be inclusive when we want to encourage our countrymen to cheer,” she wrote. “I am a Filipino but I don’t have one drop of Tagalog blood in me. Pure Vismin [Visayas and Mindanao] by birth and Ilocos by marriage.”

During the Sea Games’ opening ceremonies, President Rodrigo Duterte was seen on television dancing to the song. Sen. Ronald “Bato” de la Rosa and other spectators did so as well. ARIC JOHN SY CUA
