PH hauls 20 gold, 10 silver medals

The Philippines harvested 20 gold medals on the first day of the 2019 Southeast Asian Games.

It also tallied 10 silver and five bronze medals as of 9 p.m. on Sunday.

Dancesport delivered the most number of medals with 10 gold and two silver.

Arnis, the Philippines’ National Martial Art and Sport, contributed four gold medals, while triathlon clinched two gold and two silver medals in the men and women’s division.

Carlos Yulo added to the gold harvest, showing his world class acts in the individual all-around men’s artistic gymnastics.

Agatha Wong captured a back-to-back SEA Games victory after snaring the women’s taolu taijiquan (wushu) crown.

Sepak takraw completed the country’s early haul by sweeping the men’s and women’s hoop finals held in Subic.

The Philippines was followed by Vietnam (5 gold,12 silver,7 bronze), Malaysia (4-1-2), Singapore (3-2-4), and Thailand (2-4-8).

Indonesia placed sixth (1-2-5) followed by Brunei Darussalam (1-2-1), Cambodia (0-2-3), Myanmar (0-1-4), Laos (0-0-2), and Timor Lester (0). JEAN RUSSEL V. DAVID
