UPDATE: 3 killed, 15 injured in Borongan ambush

A policeman and two civilians were killed and 15 were wounded in an ambush by at least 50 members of the New People’s Army (NPA) in Borongan, Eastern Samar, police reported on Saturday.

Brig. Gen. Ferdinand Divina, Police Regional Office (PRO) 8 chief, identified the victims as Pat. Mark Jerome Sugalan Rama, Agripena Avilla Traboco, 69; and Anthony Balayanto, 50.

Rama was killed in the operation while Balayanto and Traboco were declared dead on arrival in the hospital.

Police said the ambush happened at Barangay Libuton at 3 p.m. on Friday.

Of the injured, four policemen from the 1st Eastern Samar Provincial Mobile Force Company (ESPMFC) were identified as Pat. Angelito Loterte, Pat. Rick Esponilla Capoquian Jr., Pat. Rey Godes Sobrepenia, and Pat. Kevin Jatulan Operario.

Pat. Christian Godino and Pat. Michael Frank M Pajanustan were unharmed, police added.

The injured civilians were: Jacob Chicano, 35; Marrian Jebulan Esposa, 20; Carlito Baldos Esposa, 65; Mark Balayanto Adona Cantos, 18; Florence Avilla Traboco, 39; Mary Grace Rapada, 44; Ma. Lilisania Obina, 34; Hector Lemer Obina, 35; John Rey Boco Traboco, 6; Francis Vie Radan, 13; and Jenalyn Boco Traboco.

Based on the report, PNP personnel were on board a marked Hilux and were headed to the Eastern Samar Police Provincial Office (ESPPO) when an alleged improvised explosive device (IED) exploded as their vehicle passed, followed by gunfire. DARWIN PESCO
