A partial solar eclipse will be visible in the Philippines on December 26.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said the solar eclipse would be seen in several areas in Davao Occidental.

It would be best to observe in Balut and Batulaki, Sarangani Islands, the weather bureau added.

Pagasa said an annular eclipse occurs when the moon is farthest from the Earth.  Since the moon is farther than usual, it appears smaller and does not block the entire view of the sun, creating a “ring of fire” effect.

The eclipse will also be visible in parts of Northern Mariana Islands, Guam, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Sri Lanka and the United Arab Emirates. FRANCIS EARL A. CUETO
