FORMER president Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino 3rd has been discharged from the hospital, days after undergoing medical tests, his spokesman said on Tuesday

“Happy to report that former president Noynoy Aquino has been discharged from the hospital today [Tuesday]. He thanks everyone who sent prayers and well-wishes,” Abigail Valte said in a text message.

Valte issued the statement amid reports that Aquino underwent an angioplasty procedure after he allegedly flatlined on Saturday morning.

But Valte denied it, saying that Aquino was confined at the Makati Medical Center for the completion of his tests.

“No flatline, no angioplasty. These rumors are getting wilder by the minute. I hope we stop giving them time of day,” Valte told The Manila Times in a text message on Saturday.

Valte confirmed that the former president had been at the Makati Medical Center since Monday, December 9.

She said Aquino was moved from the hospital’s intensive care unit to a regular room on Tuesday upon his request.

During his time as president, Aquino was known to have been a chain smoker and dealt with rumors about the state of his health.

In 2015, at the height of investigation into the death of 44 state troopers in the Mamasapano encounter, Aquino was rumored to have collapsed. Malacañang, however, denied this.

This year, Aquino was not able to attend various occasions, including the death anniversary of his father Benigno Aquino Jr. on August 21 and the launch of the memoir of his mother, former president Corazon Aquino, titled “To Love Another Day”.

During his father’s death anniversary, Aquino’s youngest sister, TV personality Kris Aquino, revealed that he was “not OK.”

“I’m sorry kung nawi-weird-an kayo, but iba ang light niya (I’m sorry if you find this weird, but he’s showing a different light), if you’re Chinese you know,” Kris said.

“These past three years had been tough on him,” she added, appealing to “please include him in your prayers because he needs strength.” CATHERINE S. VALENTE
