DITO Telecommunity Corp. has acquired more than 3,000 sites for its network infrastructure in preparation for the launch of its commercial operations next year.

In a statement over the weekend, the government-chosen Filipino-Chinese telecommunications company said it was set to hit its committed level of services in its first year of operations, which is targeted to start in 2020.

It had vowed to deliver 27 megabits per second (Mbps) of average internet speed and meet the 37.03-percent nationwide coverage within the first 12 months.

Although some sectors have expressed doubt about his company’s capability to break up the so-called duopoly of PLDT Inc. and Globe Telecom Inc., Dito Chief Administrative Officer Adel Tamano is confident about the firm’s aggressive network buildup, saying that infrastructure development in the sites it acquired was “fully underway.”

“While these inroads are, for the most part, not visible to the general public, working with our partners guarantees we have the critical pieces in place: the data centers of Dito are very close to completion, fiber resources to link the entire network have been leased from partners like SkyCable, and our very own fiber network is under construction as well,” Tamano was quoted as saying in the statement.
