VICTORIA — Pictures of two unknown persons of interest in the deaths of a man and woman in Duncan after a targeted attack Christmas Eve have been released by the Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit.

Police are hoping the public can help identify the pair.

“We have reason to believe there may have been at least one other altercation on Christmas Eve in the area of Trunk Road and Duncan Street involving the two persons of interest and an unknown person or people,” North Cowichan-Duncan RCMP Sgt. Trevor Busch said in a statement.

“We strongly urge those people to come forward immediately as they may have vital information to our ongoing investigation.”

The case involves an attack that sent the man and a woman to hospital, where the man was pronounced dead and the woman died Dec. 28.

Friends and family identified the victims as 29-year-old Nellie Williams and her boyfriend Francois “Fran” Shurie. Williams died after being put on life support following a stroke.

A friend described Williams as someone who always smiled even though she had had a tough life.

One person of interest is described as a possibly Caucasian male and was wearing a black or dark-coloured hoodie with a logo on the left chest and a horizontal pattern on the right arm. He was also wearing dark pants with a horizontal pattern on the legs, and a pair of dark-coloured or black shoes.

The other is a male who was wearing a black or dark-coloured hoodie, a pair of dark pants with a thick, white, vertical stripe on the leg, and a pair of dark shoes.

Police said they are especially interested in speaking with people who were in the area of Trunk Road and Duncan Street or Canada Avenue from 10:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. on the night of December 24, including with dashcam footage or other video surveillance.

Police have said they believe the attack was an isolated incident and the public is not at risk.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit information line at 250-380-6211.
