Vancouver police are looking into a report of an attempted child abduction in south Vancouver on Tuesday.

A 12-year-old girl told police she was walking home from school in the area of East 50th Avenue and Fraser Street around 3:20 p.m. when a red minivan pulled up alongside her.

When the driver got out of the van and asked her to come with him, the girl ran back to her school and alerted the administration.

“This young girl absolutely did the right thing by not engaging with the man and then getting to a place of safety,” said VPD spokeswoman Const. Tania Visintin.  “We commend her for her bravery as this was a terrifying situation.”

The VPD have released a photo of a red minivan — with tinted windows and a red work ladder attached to the roof — that was believed to have been in the area.

Vancouver police are looking into a report of an attempted child abduction on south Fraser Street Tuesday. A girl, 12, says a strange man tried to lure her into a red van.

The driver, who was in his mid-50s, was described as being white, about 5-foot-10, with a medium build and a pale complexion. He had white hair, facial hair, yellow teeth and was wearing a grey T-shirt and blue jeans.

Police are looking to speak to the driver or anyone who may have information about the van.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Vancouver Police Department at 604-717-0603 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
