The Jewish Community Centre of Greater Vancouver has announced Jessica Mann Gutteridge as the new artistic managing director of the Norman and Annette Rothstein Theatre and Chutzpah! Festival. Gutteridge replaces Mary-Louise Albert, who helmed both the 318-seat performance venue and the successful annual performing arts event since 2005.

Albert announced her retirement from the position in 2019.

Gutteridge joins the JCC from the theatre company Boca del Lupo and managing Performance Works on Granville Island. A founding board member of the Granville Island Theatre District, she has previously been the managing director and education manager at Carousel Theatre for Young People where she was dramaturg for new plays for young audiences and playwrights by artists such as Shakespeare to Genet to Edwin Sánchez.

An MFA graduate from the Yale School of Drama’s Department of Dramaturgy and Dramatic Criticism, Gutteridge also studied directing at Wesleyan University. Born and raised in New York, she was editor-in-chief of the Columbia-VLA Journal of Law and the Arts while attending Columbia Law School. She spent almost two decades as a advertising and trademark lawyer before returning to the arts.

“I look forward to continuing to bring diverse, world-quality artists to present their work to Chutzpah! Festival audiences, and to reach a new generation with exciting performances,” she said in a press release. “I am also delighted to steward the Rothstein Theatre as a gem appreciated by professional artists and community members throughout Metro Vancouver.”

The 2020 Chutzpah! Festival takes place in the Fall.
