Police have released images of the man suspected of stealing a number of priceless Indigenous items in downtown Vancouver earlier this month.

For two weeks, VPD have been investigating the overnight break-in of a van belonging to the Lake Babine Nation. On the evening of Jan. 15, a thief gained access to the van in a parking lot near West Pender and Richards Street, making off with nine pieces of Indigenous regalia, five drums and traditional boots used during cultural ceremonial presentations.

“The true value of this ceremonial clothing and drums is not monetary — it’s priceless in terms of the cultural significance to the people of the Lake Babine Nation,” said Sgt. Aaron Roed. “Our investigators have been working diligently on this case but have been unable to locate the items. We believe that someone knows where these items are. We just want them returned.”

The suspect, a male with a medium build, left on a bus travelling east on West Hastings Street. On Tuesday, two images of the man were released to the public. The man can be seen wearing dark pants, a dark, hooded sweatshirt under a black puffy vest, and pulling two dark grey suitcases containing the stolen items.

“Since the theft, two items have been turned in to the Carnegie Centre,” said Roed. “The remaining items can be dropped off in any public place like a community centre or our community policing centres, so they can be returned to the Lake Babine Nation.”
