Delta police are cautioning drivers, cyclists and pedestrians to stay aware of each other following a pair of accidents during rainy conditions Thursday night.

In the first accident, a cyclist was struck by a vehicle around 7:35 p.m. near a crosswalk on Harvest Drive. The driver remained at the scene and called 911. The cyclist was taken to hospital and later released.

“Alcohol and drugs are not believed to be factors in this incident, nor is speed. It was raining heavily at the time of the collision,” Delta police said a statement.

A pedestrian was later struck by vehicle around 10 p.m. inside a crosswalk at the intersection of 84th Avenue and 120th Street in North Delta.

“At the time of the collision it was raining steadily. The pedestrian was taken to hospital with what are believed to be non-serious injuries,” Delta police said.

The cause of the collision is still under investigation.

Police are urging drivers to slow down during rainy weather, particularly near crosswalks and intersections, and to keep a careful lookout for pedestrians or cyclists who may be wearing dark clothing.

Pedestrians, meanwhile, are advised to wear bright, reflective gear and carry a flashlight, and police recommend that cyclists have lights on both the front and back of their bikes.
