Police are investigating a plane crash at Merritt Airport on Monday.

Around 12:14 a.m. on Monday RCMP received a call about a pilot who was overdue. Their investigation led them to the Merritt Airport where officials found the wreckage of a small white-and-green plane on the runway.

The man who had been reported missing was found trapped inside the plane and was the only occupant. The Merritt fire department and paramedics extricated the man and he was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Police say the man, who is in his 60s, remains in hospital. His condition isn’t known.

Merritt is a small, visual-flight-rules-only airport that doesn’t have a control tower.

“The investigation into what factors led to this incident is in its very early stages,” said Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey. “RCMP will continue to support Transport Canada who is also investigating.”

Anyone who witnessed the crash, and who has yet to speak with police, is asked to contact investigators at 250-378-4262.
