Fan Expo Vancouver

When: Feb. 15 to 17

Where: Vancouver Convention Centre

Tickets: from $35 (single-day admission for adults), at fanexpovancouver.com

1. Brendan Fraser. The American-Canadian actor, ubiquitous in the ’90s (Encino Man, The Mummy), tops this year’s list of guests. Bruce Campbell (The Evil Dead), Marina Sirtis and Levar Burton (Star Trek: The Next Generation), and Christina Ricci (The Addams Family) are among the many other visiting film and TV actors.

2. Todd McFarlane. The Calgary-born-and-raised co-founder of Image Comics, creator of Spawn, and toy manufacturer/designer, is one of the guest comics creators. Others include veteran artists (Michael Golden, Don Rosa, Mike Grell, and Arthur “Art” Adams) and newer talent (Faith Erin Hicks, Amy Chu, Cary Nord).

3. Johnnie Christmas. Vancouver has a wealth of comics talent, including artist Johnnie Christmas, who has worked with both William Gibson and Margaret Atwood. Along with Christmas, other local guest creators include Ian Boothby, Pia Guerra, Nathan Fairbairn, and Simon Roy.

4. Harley Quinn. Yes, you’ll see pro cosplayers — people whose main (or side) gig is dressing up as various characters and attending cons like this one. Even more exciting are the folks who only get a chance to dress up as their favourite characters a few times a year, and who come out in droves to Fan Expo Vancouver.

5. Ritual: Exorcism in Film & Television. Workshops, panels, Q&As, and seminars are also part of the experience. Hosted by Travel Channel’s Morgan Knudsen (Haunted Hospitals, Paranormal 911, A Haunting), this panel explores true cases behind movies like The Exorcist.
