Week 6 a defining moment for college League teams

Maryville University remains the No. 1 College League of Legends team in the country as regular season play in multiple regions approaches its close.

The Saints are among four teams that remain unbeaten in the North region, all of which are ranked in the top 10 entering a big week. Maryville will face No. 10 Illinois, and either No. 2 Columbia College or No. 9 Michigan State will exit Week 6 with their first loss of the CLoL season.

Unbeaten records through Week 5 of the regular season propelled other teams into the rankings, too. LSU’s unblemished record in the South and win over Texas gave it a nudge into the rankings at No. 21, and Simon Fraser, at 5-0 in the West with a notable victory over Colorado, claimed the final spot in the top 25. The Tigers will have a tough test this week with a match against No. 4 Winthrop, while Simon Fraser also earned itself a top 10 opponent in the Swiss bracket with No. 8 Arizona State lying in wait.

As usual, the latter portion of the CLoL season will be a key moment for many teams hoping to qualify for the playoffs. The Riot Scholastic Association of America announced Tuesday that it will be putting together a selection committee to pick the final four teams to qualify for the College League of Legends Championship. It will be the first time at-large bids come into play for CLoL, and the results of this weekend will likely play a large role in the decisions to come on that front.

Below are the full results of the top 25. Numbers in parentheses indicate the number of first-place votes for a team. The ESPN poll aggregates picks from nearly 40 coaches across North America every other week during the College League of Legends season.
