THE chief of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) in Bacolod City was arrested for robbery-extortion, police reported on Friday.

Col. Ronald Lee, chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP) Integrity Monitoring and Enforcement Group (IMEG), identified the official as Maj. Melvin Madrona.

Also arrested was Madrona’s alleged accomplice, Jay-R dela Cruz, 40.

Lee said the two were caught in an entrapment operation inside the cockpit arena in Mansilingan after they received P5,000 in marked bills from the complainant at 5:35 p.m. on Thursday.

The operation was led by PNP-IMEG Visayas Field Unit backed up by PNP Special Action Force (SAF), the 6th Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit and the Police Regional Office (PRO) 6 Intelligence Division.

The sting was conducted as complainants Ashly Alba, Rosalie Pesquera, and Rizaldy Claver sought assistance against the suspects who were demanding weekly P5,000 protection money.

The two, who are now under the custody of the PNP-IMEG, are facing criminal charges. Madrona will be slapped with a separate administrative case.

The arrest was part of the internal cleansing effort of the PNP under its chief, Gen. Archie Francisco Gamboa.
