Canada launches new temporary residence pathway to welcome Ukrainians seeking refuge

Canada has announced the launch of Canada-Ukraine authorization for emergency travel (CUAET), a special accelerated temporary residence pathway for Ukrainians seeking refuge from the war in their home country.
According to the announcement on March 17, 2022, CUAET will allow Ukrainians and their immediate family members of any nationality to remain in Canada as temporary residents for up to three years.
Applicants who are overseas can apply online for a Canadian visitor visa and provide their biometrics (fingerprints and a photo). Applicants are encouraged to apply for a three-year open work permit at the same time as their visa application. Elementary and high school students can register for and start attending school as soon as they arrive in Canada, and anyone looking to study at the post-secondary level can apply for a study permit once they arrive. The government will consider applications from Ukrainians without a valid passport on a case-by-case basis.
Ukrainian workers, students and visitors and their family members already in Canada can apply to extend their visitor status or work permit for 3 years, apply for a new work or study permit, or extend their existing permit, with all application fees being waived.
The Government of Canada is also calling on employers who wish to support Ukrainians with offers of employment to register these offers on Job Bank’s Jobs for Ukraine webpage. Job Bank will then work with local organizations and employers to help connect them with Ukrainians seeking work in their communities.
Ihor Michalchyshyn, CEO & executive director of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress commends the government on the new programs to welcome people from Ukraine. However, she stresses the importance of adequate settlement support. “There is a need for additional support to make the transition to Canada work,” she says. “We are asking the government to adjust their programming to meet the needs of these displaced people, so that when they arrive in Canada their basic needs can be met.”
“Our community is committed to working with the government to welcome and support these Ukrainians,” she says.
Canada has the world’s third-largest Ukrainian population behind Ukraine and Russia.
