President Marcos appoints Catapang as permanent BuCor chief

MANILA, Philippines — Bureau of Corrections officer-in-charge Gregorio Catapang Jr. has been appointed as permanent head of the BuCor, replacing Gerald Bantag, who is being accused as the mastermind in the killing of broadcaster Percy Lapid in October last year.
President Marcos signed Catapang’s appointment paper on Thursday, based on the document released by the Department of Justice (DOJ).
Catapang served as chief of staff of the Armed Forces. He is a member of the Philippine Military Academy’s “Dimalupig” Class of 1981.
Murder charges were filed against Bantag for his alleged involvement in the deaths of Lapid and New Bilibid Prison inmate and alleged conspirator Cristito “Jun Villamor” Palaña.
Last March 10, Bantag joined Marcos on stage when his son, Seal Bantag, received his diploma for the degree of Bachelor of Science in Public Safety during the Philippine National Police Academy graduation in Silang, Cavite.
In a media interview after the graduation ceremonies, Bantag said he would respect Marcos’ decision on whether he would continue as BuCor chief.
Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla earlier suspended Bantag to give way to the investigation on the death of Lapid, the radio commentator whose real name was Percival Mabasa.
The DOJ has expressed its full support for Catapang, stating that they will work hand-in-hand with the new BuCor chief to implement planned projects and programs that will bring about positive change for the bureau and its inmates.
“The Department would like to express its full support to the new director general of the Bureau of Corrections in his endeavor. Together, we will pursue the planned projects and programs for the betterment of the bureau and the welfare of our PDLs,” the DOJ said in a statement, referring to persons deprived of liberty. – Neil Jayson Servallos
