MANILA, Philippines — President Marcos called on Filipino Christians yesterday to work for “better days” in his message for Easter Sunday, describing the religious event as an “opportunity for renewal and recovery.”

According to Marcos, Easter teaches Christians that as long as they live their lives in Christ, love and hope “will remain ever so boundless” and will be the “cornerstones for the positive transformation” of society.

“May this day be an opportunity for us to pause and give thanks for the opportunity for renewal and recovery as we push through our quest for genuine unity and progress for all,” the President said.

“As we celebrate the magnificent glory of our risen Savior, let us all take into heart this Christian foundation as we work for and welcome better days for ourselves, our families, and our neighbors as well,” he added.

Marcos said Jesus Christ’s resurrection not only affirms Christians’ “deepest faith” but also signifies “a new birth for all the faithful to walk in the new way of life and be granted eternal salvation.”

“Today, we are witnesses to the triumph of the Resurrection of our Savior that inspires us to be stewards of faith and compassion no matter the circumstances,” the Chief Executive said

“Indeed, His selfless and unconditional love empowered us to conquer both sin and death, allowing us to deepen our relationship with God and become worthy Christians in this earthly journey,” he added.

Easter, the most important celebration of Christianity, commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Christians believe that Jesus suffered and died on the cross on Good Friday to redeem humanity from sin.

More than 80 percent of Filipinos in the country are Christians, the majority of them Roman Catholics.

Meanwhile, at the House of Representatives, Speaker Martin Romualdez yesterday called on everyone to rest and reflect during the “time of hope” as Christians commemorate the resurrection of Jesus Christ on Easter Sunday.

“It is a time of great joy and jubilation, for our Lord Jesus rose from the dead after dying to redeem us from our sins. It is also a time of hope, for in our Lord’s resurrection we find that the promise of eternal life holds true for all of Christianity,” he said.

“I hope and pray that the Holy Week has given all of us ample time to rest and spend quality time with our family and loved ones. I also hope that all of us had the opportunity to reflect on our past actions and contemplate finding the right path forward,” Romualdez added.

The House leader also enjoined the public to thank God for “our health, our safety, and the blessings and bounty of nature,” and the “opportunity to physically celebrate with our friends, family, and colleagues, which the restrictions due to the coronavirus pandemic have prevented us from doing so in the past years.”

The House is on recess and will resume session on May 8 but Romualdez has authorized the conduct of committee hearings during the break, consistent with the chamber’s commitment to approve its priority measures on time. — Delon Porcalla
