Bongbong Marcos watches as Navy tests missile, displays warfighting capability in Zambales

SAN ANTONIO, Zambales — Aboard the viewing ship BRP Davao Del Sur (LD602), President Bongbong Marcos witnessed the Philippine Navy (PN) missile test firing and capability demonstration on Friday, May 19, off the coast of this town.

PN displayed its first-ever anti-air warfare capabilities with the test firing of the Mistral 3 surface-to-air (SAM) missile fitted on guided missile frigate BRP Antonio Luna, the launching of Bullfighter Chaff onboard BRP Jose Rizal class frigate, and of an anti-submarine warfare naval helicopter.

The event is part of the major events commemorating the PN’s 125th anniversary later this month.

During his speech that was live streamed, PN Chief Vice Admiral Toribio Adaci Jr. said the activities would be a preview of the Navy’s increased warfighting capabilities, especially in air defense, electronic warfare, and vessel survivability, which are “vital in navigating the evolving security challenges in our maritime environment.”

Adaci said the modern acquisition not only signifies their readiness to defend the country’s maritime domain but also reflects the tremendous progress  they have made in reinforcing the naval force.

“These demonstrations also represent two things; first, it is a testament to the tireless efforts of the men and women of the team navy, whose dedication, professionalism, and sacrifice form the bedrock of our naval force,” said Adaci.

He added: “Second, the acquisition of these cutting-edge technologies and defense systems embodies our government’s support and commitment to equipping the Philippine Navy with the necessary tools to face any challenges that may arise.”

Adaci also thanked Marcos for the passage of Republic Act 11939 with the intent of enhancing professionalism and providing continuity of programs in the Armed Forces of the Philippines.

During the event, Mistral 3 SAM hit and destroyed a drone as a mock target to demonstrate a scenario where the FF151 detects an unmanned aerial hostile.

Mr. Marcos was joined at the event by Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez, National Security Advisor Sec. Eduardo Año, Officer in charge of the Department of National Defense Senior Undersecretary Carlito Galvez Jr., Chief of staff of Armed Forces of the Philippines Gen. Andres Centino, Senior leaders of the DND, AFP, Philippine Coast Guards, and Philippine National Police. INQ
