MANILA, Philippines — Almost nine in 10 Filipinos feel safe within their communities, according to a survey released yesterday by OCTA Research.

Results of the March 24 to 28 poll showed that 87 percent of the respondents either strongly or somewhat agree to the statement, “Generally, I feel safe in our neighborhood.”

Only four percent of the respondents said they somewhat disagree with the statement. The remaining nine percent could not say if they agree or disagree.

Across areas, those who feel safe in their neighborhood was highest among respondents in Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon at 91 percent, followed by those in Mindanao at 83 percent and the Visayas at 81 percent.

The survey also found a majority or 72 percent of the respondents saying they do not constantly worry about burglars entering their home.

Some 11 percent said they are worried while 17 percent could not say whether they are worried or not.

In terms of walking alone at night in their neighborhood, some 80 percent said they feel safe while 10 percent said they do not. The remaining nine percent were undecided.

The respondents were also asked about the presence of illegal drugs in their neighborhood.

Less than half or only 48 percent said they live in a neighborhood free from illegal drugs while 23 percent think there are drugs in their communities.

Some 29 percent could not say if there are illegal drugs in their communities.

OCTA’s non-commissioned Tugon ng Masa survey has 1,200 adult respondents and a margin of error of +/- three percent.
