4 Pinoys hurt in missile attack in Ukraine

MANILA, Philippines — Four Filipino seafarers injured in a Russian missile attack in Ukraine are now out of harm’s way, according to the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW).
“We are coordinating with their main agency and ship owner to know the eventuality as the current legal option is to have them repatriated,” DMW officer-in-charge Hans Cacdac said in a mix of English and Filipino in a television interview yesterday.
The four Filipinos – a ship captain, an able seaman, a deck cadet and an electrician – are among the crew of a Liberia-flagged civilian vessel entering a Black Sea port in the Odesa region.
Cacdac said the seafarers sustained minor injuries and their families have been notified of the incident.
The ship’s electrician sustained a fracture in his left hand and was taken to a hospital for treatment.
The other three were “far enough from the impact of the missile not to sustain major injuries,” Cacdac noted.
In a statement, the Ukrainian southern military command said an anti-radar Russian missile hit the ship’s superstructure.
