4.5 magnitude earthquake hits waters off Hinatuan in Surigao del Sur

MANILA, Philippines — A magnitude-4.5 earthquake hit the waters off Hinatuan town in Surigao del Sur on Tuesday morning, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

In its initial bulletin, Phivolcs said the tectonic tremor happened at 7:21 a.m., some 46 kilometers (km) southwest of Hinatuan. The quake had a depth of focus of 13 km.

According to Phivolcs, the earthquake is an aftershock of the 7.4 magnitude temblor that jolted Hinatuan on December 2, 2023.

The quake registered strength of Instrumental Intensity II in Bislig City, Surigao del Sur, and Instrumental Intensity I in Nabunturan, Davao de Oro.
