Some LTFRB programs exempted from Comelec ban

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has granted the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board’s (LTFRB) request to exempt some of its programs from the government spending ban in connection with the 2026 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE).

“We exempted the fuel subsidy of the [LTFRB] on social services,” Comelec Chair George Garcia told reporters in a Viber message.

Comelec spokesperson John Rex Laudiangco also said the exemption covered free rides for the Love Bus as well as the monthly assistance for qualified participants of the Public Transport Modernization Program.

The LTRFB had sought the exemption in a Sept. 15 letter to Comelec for its “continuing government programs” that were not “election-related or partisan activities.” In line with the BSKE scheduled on Nov. 2, the Comelec has prohibited the disbursement, release and spending of public funds without its approval from Sept. 18 to Nov. 1. —DIANNE SAMPANG
