Carmen Guerrero Nakpil dies at 96

Former National Historical Commission Chair Carmen Guerrero Nakpil passed away this morning at the age of 96.

The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) broke the sad news through a Facebook post today.

“We join all who love the history and heritage of the Philippines in mourning the passing away of Carmen Guerrero Nakpil, who was Chairman of the National Historical Commission from 1967-1971,” NHCP stated.

Gemma Cruz Araneta, Nakpil’s daughter, said that the late NHCP Chair “passed away at 1:30 this morning,” in a message delivered to historian Xiao Chua.

“Her works in Philippine history and culture, and her contributions to the development of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines, will live on and serve as a guide for succeeding generations of Filipinos,” NHCP wrote.
