Jeepney driver dies after suffering heart attack during transport strike

MANILA — Jeepney driver Elmer Cordero passed away on Wednesday evening, October 7, after suffering a heart attack during the transport strike last September 29.

Cordero, 78, died while confined in the hospital.

According to transport group PISTON, Cordero was rushed to the hospital on September 29 after collapsing during a transport strike protest.

He spent nine days in the hospital.

PISTON National President Mody Floranda recounted the moments leading up to the incident.

“Actually inatake siya noong September 29, noong start ng welga natin na kung saan ay mga bandang ala una ay biglang naupo lang. Naupo siya sa isang bangketa doon sa circle ng Monumento at nakita ng mga kasama na parang hapong-hapo, hirap na hirap,” Floranda stated, noting that quick assistance from the barangay enabled them to rush him to the hospital.

Floranda emphasized that Cordero’s influence extended far beyond the transport sector: “Si Tatay Elmer ay hindi lamang tsuper yung nagmamahal sa kanya, kundi yung iba’t ibang sektor ng ating lipunan.”

Regarding hospital expenses incurred during his nine-day confinement, Floranda indicated that financial assistance would come from collective solidarity.

“Hindi ko pa alam kung magkano… Pero siyempre yung panggastos naman sa hospital galing din sa donation, galing din sa tulong ng mga grupo, mga individual na nakakilala kay Tatay Elmer,” he said.

In the wake of his passing, PISTON has called on transport workers, operators, and sympathizers to honor his memory.

The group has urged supporters to display black and blue ribbons on public utility vehicles, in markets, and within communities as a symbol of solidarity and a tribute to the causes Cordero championed throughout his life.

Details regarding his wake and official tribute are expected to be announced soon by his family and organization.
