ABS-CBN News U.S. correspondent John Saavedra honored at 2026 Legacy and Media Awards in LA

LOS ANGELES, California — Filipino American journalist and ABS-CBN News U.S. correspondent John Saavedra was nominated and selected as one of the distinguished honorees at the 2026 Legacy and Media Awards, receiving the Outstanding Journalist and U.S. Correspondent recognition on October 10 in Los Angeles, California.

Organized by the Filipino American Press Club of California (FAPCCA), the ceremony recognized Filipino and Filipino American professionals whose contributions have made an impact in journalism, entertainment, media, and community leadership.

Held during Filipino American History Month, the event celebrated individuals whose work continues to strengthen cultural representation and highlight Filipino achievements in the United States.

Saavedra was recognized for his contributions to journalism and his commitment to sharing stories that reflect the experiences, challenges, and achievements of Filipinos, particularly Filipino Americans.

“As a U.S. correspondent, this recognition represents more than a personal achievement. It reflects the inspiring stories of countless Filipinos around the world, especially Filipino Americans whose journeys of sacrifice, resilience, and success deserve to be heard,” Saavedra said.

“Through my reporting, I have had the privilege of sharing the stories of Filipino nurses and caregivers who dedicate their lives to serving others, educators who shape future generations, artists and athletes who bring pride to our country, and everyday Filipinos who continue to pursue their dreams far from home,” he added.

Saavedra emphasized that journalism serves as a bridge between Filipino communities and the wider world.

“I see myself as a bridge, connecting Filipino communities and sharing with the world who we are, our struggles, our triumphs, and our contributions to society. This recognition is not mine alone. It belongs to every Filipino whose story has inspired me to continue doing what I do,” Saavedra said.

AMPLIFYING FILIPINO VOICES THROUGH JOURNALISM

As a U.S. correspondent for ABS-CBN News, Saavedra covers stories involving education, healthcare, immigration, entertainment, sports, business, and Filipino community affairs.

His reporting has highlighted Filipino healthcare professionals, educators making an impact in American classrooms, entertainers and athletes gaining recognition, and immigrant families whose experiences reflect the challenges and opportunities of building lives abroad.

Throughout his media career, Saavedra has conducted one-on-one interviews with prominent Filipino personalities, including singers Lani Misalucha, Kuh Ledesma, Nina, and Kris Lawrence; rapper and comedian Andrew E.; actor Eric Quizon; professional boxer Charly Suarez; and personalities such as Manny Victorino, Nurse Even, Garth Garcia, Mark Mabasa, and many more.

Beyond news reporting, Saavedra is also the host and producer of The Unlimited John, a podcast that has completed five seasons featuring conversations with Filipino and Filipino American personalities about their personal journeys, cultural identity, and achievements.

A FILIPINO TRAILBLAZER IN EDUCATION

Beyond the newsroom, Saavedra continues to make an impact in education as a full-time English teacher in Arizona, where his dedication to teaching has also earned statewide recognition.

In 2026, he was named Arizona Teacher of the Year, becoming the first Filipino educator to receive the distinction across the Legacy Traditional Schools network of more than 24 schools.

The recognition highlights his commitment to student literacy, academic excellence, and inspiring the next generation of learners.

While balancing his responsibilities as a full-time educator and U.S. correspondent, Saavedra is also pursuing a Doctor of Education degree at Capella University, with an anticipated graduation in 2027.

CELEBRATING FILIPINO EXCELLENCE AND REPRESENTATION

The 2026 Legacy and Media Awards also recognized other Filipino and Filipino American personalities, including members of the cast, production team, and creative leadership of Nurse the Dead, a Filipino television series produced in Hollywood that highlights the experiences of Filipino nurses.

Their recognition reflected the growing visibility of Filipino talent and the importance of sharing stories that celebrate Filipino identity and contributions to society.

As Filipino Americans celebrate their history and contributions throughout October, Saavedra’s recognition serves as a reminder of the importance of telling stories that might otherwise go unheard.

Through journalism and education, his work continues to highlight the experiences of Filipinos whose determination, achievements, and contributions help shape communities in the United States and beyond.
