By Roy Mabasa

The Philippine government has urged members of the Filipino community in Baghdad to be vigilant after rounds of mortar were fired inside the Green Zone shortly after midnight on Friday.

Three mortar shells landed in an abandoned lot inside the heavily fortified Green Zone and there were no casualties, the Philippine Embassy in Bahgdad said in a report.

It added that the mortars exploded near the embassies of the United States and Egypt.

This is the first such attack in several years.

Chargé d’Affaires Julius Torres said the more than 200 Filipinos working in the Green Zone, including those at the US Embassy, are safe but were advised to follow the security protocols of their respective companies.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.

Filipinos in Iraq who need assistance are advised to contact the Embassy at +9647816066822; +9647516167838; and +9647735699562.
